The Award will be presented to the scheme which, in the opinion of the judges, constitutes the best contribution by a bus operator, authority, manufacturer or any group or individual within those organisations to one or more of the following:
- Further improving the environmental friendliness of the bus
- Improving the environment in which buses operate
- Improving the environment for bus users and potential users.
Winner: UK Bus Sustainability Strategy
The Stagecoach Group has set very ambitious targets for reducing its carbon footprint and has invested heavily in a whole series of measures to become a greener business.
The judges were extremely impressed with the detailed exercise undertaken to determine the current carbon footprint and assess realistic ways in which this could be reduced.
Through clear staff engagement at all levels and initiatives like ‘Green Champions’ at each bus company and a Group-wide ‘Green Week’, as well as a number of individual projects, new ideas have evolved so that, with a Group-wide commitment to the Sustainability Strategy, substantial progress is being made in reducing the impact of the Group’s bus operations on the environment.
Runner Up: The DriveGreen Programme
FirstGroup UK Bus
FirstGroup has installed the revolutionary eco-driving technology, DriveGreen, across its fleet of 8,500 buses in the UK. Whilst other bus companies have also implemented the DriveGreen system, FirstGroup is the first major company to fit the equipment to its whole fleet.
The ground-breaking equipment was installed as part of First’s Climate Change Strategy to improve the fuel efficiency of its bus fleet.
Positive results from the scheme were immediate and, as well as bringing a substantial saving in fuel costs, the system is having a very beneficial effect on unnecessary driving manoeuvres (70% reduction) leading to fewer accidents and improved journey smoothness and safety for passengers.
Oxford Bus Company - Environmental Policy and Practice
For the last seventeen years, Oxford Bus Company has always been at the forefront of practical environmental excellence, and has consistently met the challenging expectations of a very environmentally-aware local community. Initiatives such as its award-winning ‘star rating’ of vehicles have demonstrated to a wide audience the environmental credentials of the bus.
Sustained commercial investment and proactive policies, which have achieved a low-emission fleet driven to exacting standards and backed up by leading-edge depot management, have made Oxford Bus consistently ‘Britain’s greenest bus company’. The judges considered that Oxford Bus Company’s environmental record over such a prolonged period fully deserved special recognition.
First London and Transport for London - the Lea Interchange Depot Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project
The Lea Interchange Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project is a Transport for London (TfL) led project to introduce five, growing to eight, fuel cell buses running on the high profile central London RV1 route (Covent Garden to Tower Bridge).
Described as "science fiction on the streets" the Zero Emissions Hydrogen Fuel Cell project has already replaced five standard single deck diesel buses on the route, and by Autumn 2011 a further three hydrogen buses will have joined the fleet. With water the only by-product, this will further cut emissions and improve the environment for all.
Johnsons Coach & Bus Travel and partners - Electric Bus Trial
In July 2010, Johnsons orchestrated a comparative trial between Britain’s first viable, full-size, battery-powered bus, the Optare Solo EV, and its conventional diesel-engined equivalent. Publication of research provided a sound environmental case and demonstrated commercial viability for the use of electric buses, as well as creating a bank of practical advice for operators.
Partners included Optare Solo EV team, members of the CABLED project from Aston University and Coventry University, local authorities from both Stratford District and Warwickshire County Council, environmental consultancy Greenwatt Technology, and financial support from Stratford Town Trust.
Stagecoach in Oxfordshire - Introducing Electric Hybrid Buses to Oxford
With the aid of a £2.3m government grant, Stagecoach has invested £7.4 million in a fleet of 26 state-of-the-art electric hybrid buses for Oxford, which emit nearly a third less carbon than equivalent diesel buses.
Managers set themselves the task was to highlight the green credentials of the new fleet, ensuring that people knew that Stagecoach was investing in green technology and that bus travel in Oxford was even more environmentally friendly than before – providing a further incentive to leave the car at home.
Transport for London - West Ham Bus Garage
The West Ham garage project was part of the relocation of East London Bus Group's Stratford & Waterden Road bus garage operations, as part of the Olympic Park Development. The new garage was built on a brownfield site, used recycled materials in its construction and designed to recycle as much as possible during its operation to avoid depletion of natural resources.
The facility is predicted to cut C02 emissions by around 27% compared to a standard industrial building. Key features of the bus garage include a living green roof planted with sedum, biomass boilers providing a significant proportion of the building's heating requirements and a 100kW wind turbine producing around 10 per cent of the garage's predicted electricity needs.
Judges' Overall Verdict
The entries were generally of a good quality as well as quantity, so that the judges had a difficult job arriving at a shortlist. The judges were pleased to see that all the best schemes showed good evidence of strong partnership internally and/or with outside stakeholders.
Definition of Environmental Benefits for this Award
For the avoidance of doubt, environmental benefits in the context of this award are defined as:
- Changes to noise levels
- Changes to vehicle emissions, either in total or in the chemical content which would be less harmful to either public health or in reducing contributions to global warming
- Changes to air quality in specific areas (for example, depots, terminals or other places where vehicles and humans interact), including local authority designated Air Quality Management Areas.
- A reduction in waste products or in the environmental effects of waste products.
- Improved energy efficiency in either premises or on the road
Who could be nominated?
This category was open to industry suppliers, operators and authorities either separately or in conjunction with one another.
… and by whom?
Nominations were welcomed from all eligible organisations, and self-nomination was acceptable.
Criteria and Entry Requirements
Decisions were based on the quality of the submissions made and the extent to which they address the criteria. Nominations should therefore provide information on:
- The nature of the project(s) and its intended effect on the environmental impact of the bus
- The extent of technological innovation
- Where the nomination concerns a new product or service, the extent of its commercial success
- Deliverability on an industry-wide basis (this would include the practicality and affordability of the idea).
- Where the nomination concerns a new product, the degree to which the product has proved reliable in everyday service and delivered the benefits intended.
- The extent to which customer and market research was employed in the development of the product
- The involvement of other partners in the industry in the development of the project or product.
Entries needed to address each of the above criteria to assist with the judging process, and were required also set the entry in the context of the entrant’s overall approach to Corporate Social Responsibility.
In this context, entrants may be requested to provide details of customers using the product and their agreement for the Management Committee and/or judges to approach such customers for independent verification.
Products or services entered for consideration need not necessarily be exclusive to the bus industry, but entrants need to demonstrate that it has widespread application within the industry.
