The award for investment in projects to makes bus passengers' lives better as they wait for the bus (stops, shelters and terminals), or to make their journeys faster and more reliable through traffic management and bus priority schemes.
Schemes submitted for this award can consist of bus priority measures, bus stations, route infrastructure work or a mixture of all three.
The judges were looking in particular for schemes which, amongst other things, provide:
- Positive benefits - without unintended disbenefits
- Good design - which meets operators’ requirements
- Quality - of both service and infrastructure
- Bus priority - on routes seen by operators as important.
The Winners: Primelines Partnership
Coventry County Council and partners
Primelines is an impressive partnership project in Coventry delivering high quality bus infrastructure and services to increase bus patronage across the city. It includes 5.3km of bus lanes plus 4.9km of red routes, 13 new bus gates and bus bypasses to allow buses to overtake stationary traffic, 70 new bus shelters with seating and real time information, 19 new bus stop flags with real time information displays, and 80 new traffic signals equipped for bus priority, supported by clever marketing including personalised journey and travel planning.
The £41.5 million project has been jointly funded through the West Midlands Local Transport Plan (£28m), Coventry bus operators (£8m), and Centro (£5.5m). Early results are impressive showing 47% of householders have changed their travel behaviour, 39% of householders have reduced the amount they have driven, with 24% using the bus more frequently.

First Cymru and the City & County of Swansea, ftrmetro Swansea
City & County of Swansea for Landore Express Bus Route (Phase 2)
The groundbreaking ftrmetro project has been developed in partnership between the City & County of Swansea and First Cymru to deliver high quality Bus Rapid Transit for the city, linking the two hospitals, sports stadium, university, the Civic Centre, and the city centre. The bus priority measures include the dedicated Landore Express Bus Route and the two-way track between Orchard Street and the Civic Centre, giving 1.5 miles of dedicated road space for buses) along the 8.3 mile route promotes a very positive image of public transport for the 21st century and is already contributing to passenger growth and modal shift.
The Landore Express Bus Route provides bus priority infrastructure which is utilised by Landore Park and Ride bus services and Swansea ftrmetro.
The first phase was introduced in 2004. The second phase introduced last year provides a bus only link from the congested Neath Road to the High Street Railway Station. The new link reduces traffic on Neath Road by diverting buses onto the new route, allowing these buses to bypass the very busy Dyfatty junction, thereby saving around five minutes journey time into the city centre, speeding up services to the benefit of both bus passengers and operators, bringing further passenger growth from the Landore Park & Ride services. This phase is an essential element to the reliability and success of the new Swansea ftrmetro.
The judges wished this entry to be seen at the Awards Ceremony as joint with the First Cymru/City & County of Swansea entry for Swansea ftrmetro of which it is a significant part.
Lisburn Buscentre Project
The opening of the new Buscentre in Lisburn, June 2008 was the latest in a series of new and improved facilities for the travelling public in Northern Ireland.Up until the opening of the new buscentre the city did not have a proper public bus station. Translink identified the need to dramatically upgrade public transport facilities and provide a new modern buscentre.
Scarborough Park & Ride
North Yorkshire County Council and partners
The partners have developed Scarborough Park & Ride services as part of the £30m Scarborough Integrated Transport Scheme. The P&R services are being delivered to the highest standards coupling modern passenger facilities with new low floor low emission vehicles. A brand identity has been designed which provides a distinctive vehicle livery which is reflected in all marketing and publicity material.
A23 Decongestion Project: Redhill - Horley Quality Bus Corridor
Surrey County Council
Surrey County Council project-managed a package of bus -based public transport improvements on the A23 between Redill and Horley, using LTP, private sector and central government New Growths Point funding. Includes: rebuilt Redhill bus station, rebuilt bus turnaround at East Surrey Hospital, bus stop accessibility improvements, new shelters, Fastway 100 route network, Horley Rail Station bus interchange.
Doncaster Bus Infrastructure
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive
This submission is based upon significant investment in Doncaster's public transport infrastructure facilities through the delivery of the Frenchgate Interchange and the A638 Quality Bus Corridor. This investment is supported by the introduction of Statutory Quality Partnership Schemes (SQPS's) in order to raise the quality of bus services using these facilities and the commitment by the authorities to protect them.
Who could be nominated?
Entries were welcomed from transport authorities and bus operators working separately or together to achieve overall benefits for the community.

Nominations were accepted from all eligible organisations, and self-nomination was acceptable.
Criteria and Entry Requirements
Entries are judged on the overall quality of the submissions, which need to:
- Describe the degree of co-operation and consultation which took place between the highway authority and local bus operator(s)
- Show that the criteria adopted by the highway authority included the extent of road space reallocation in favour of the bus.
- Show that the project took a comprehensive approach to important bus corridor(s).
- Describe the arrangements made for the enforcement of bus priorities
- Describe the arrangements made for infrastructure maintenance
- Show the extent to which the project and its arrangements were based on common sense and best practice.
- Demonstrate that the scheme is in operation, and has been for a sufficient period of time to allow the outcomes to be monitored.
- Evidence of outcome against projections MUST be provided.State whether the results are likely to be sustainable
- Describe any future plans for further development.
- Include any relevant supporting material.
