This award focuses specially on the talent we will all rely on to deliver our bus services for the next 20 years and more: the young managers, currently delivering and planning services at the sharp end - but whose skills will be vitally important over the coming years as the bus increasingly comes to be seen as an aid to reducing carbon emissions and fighting climate change.

Winner: Christina Ratcliffe

Operations Manager, Torquay Depot, Stagecoach South West.

Winner Christina RatcliffeChristina plays a key role in the operational function of her depot, successfully managing and leading her team. She understands the key deliverables of her job and empowers staff in a collaborative way to ensure they deliver the desired results.  Christina identifies her goals and works hard to achieve them.  She is an excellent ambassador for managers on the rise, proven through her success in reducing costs and improving profitability whilst retaining staff morale.

Christina, a history graduate, joined Stagecoach in 2005 and has followed a structured graduate management training spending a year in South Wales where she had to absorb all aspects of the business.

She was then appointed Assistant Operations Manager at Newcastle in one of the UK’s largest depots taking responsibility for the day-to-day operations of over 100 buses and almost 300 drivers

A Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Christina is currently studying for her CILT Level 3 qualification, which will earn her International Manager’s CPC. She is also an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and the executive branch Director of the Torbay Town Centres Company.

And when she gets time to spare she enjoys dancing – having previously been a dancer and teacher with the IDTA - and motor biking!

Runner Up: Ed Wills

Runner up Ed WillsTransdev Yellow Buses

Yellow Buses in Bournemouth is a company that has transformed itself since being bought by Transdev from its previous local authority owner.

Ed has been a fundamental part of this success. He was recruited in 2006 and tasked with the massive challenge of turning around the company’s operation from a poorly performing one with inadequately trained and demotivated staff into one that is first class, delivering a top quality service to the company’s passengers in a highly competitive environment. With his communication skills, business awareness, an ability to make decisions and solve problems, and the capacity to recognise and develop good staff, he has achieved this.

Ed has shown an excellence in management and leadership skills across all the areas of his responsibility and has been a key part in Yellow Buses’ success in the 2009 Shire Operator Award.

Mark KiplingMark Kipling

National Express West Midlands

Mark Kipling, 25, has risen from the National Express graduate scheme to manage one of Birmingham's largest bus operations. With responsibility for over 400 staff, 160 vehicles and a turnover of £23 million, his career highlights include the successful integration of a major network review, leading the engineering team to a nationwide award and a 20% reduction in lost mileage.

Rosie StewartRosie Stewart

First Glasgow

Rosie Stewart is a dynamic young manager who is passionate about the bus industry, having been bitten by the bug at just 17 years old. A graduate of FirstGroup's Senior Management Training Scheme, she faces challenges head-on and delivers time and time again. She is a terrific ambassador for the bus industry and has a very bright future ahead.

Who could be nominated?

This award was open to all managers under the age of 30 who:

  • lead an organisation or major business unit in a professional capacity
  • own and operate their own business employing more than five people
  • work in a local authority, government department or quasi non-governmental organisation with functional responsibility for more than five staff

and by whom?

We welcomed nominations from all eligible organisations, both of their own employees and of outstanding young managers with whom they work in partnership or as stakeholders. Self-nomination was not considered appropriate for this category.

Criteria and Entry Requirements

The judges reached their decision on the quality of the written submissions made by the nominating organisation and by the nominees themselves.

Short-listed entrants were required to make a presentation to the judges and be interviewed by them.

Nominating organisations must be able to demonstrate that the nominees have shown excellence in management and leadership, and that this has been recognised by them.

Nominees must be able to demonstrate:

An ability to manage complex tasks, people, processes and the environment in which their organisation operates

  • Effective communication skills with both staff and stakeholders
  • A commitment to mentoring or other leadership activities
  • Demonstrable ability to perform to a budget

As part of the entry, entrants were required to submit a paper of not more than 2,000 words describing their own current functions, achievements and problems.

Short-listed finalists were required to make a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation on the role of their organisation in the community and the wider transport market, and to answer questions from the judging panel (also 15 minutes).
